Sperm donation is a great process that helps people achieve their dreams of having a family. Without you, the donor, this whole process wouldn’t even be possible! You may be wondering, what happens to your sperm after you donate? There’s a lot to it, and it could be interesting to know what happens:
Becoming a Sperm Donor
Getting accepted as a sperm donor is an extensive process. Here’s a summary of our process here at Cascade Cryobank:
- Know our qualifications. We are looking for men aged 21-39 years old. We also have other requirements such as health status, lifestyle habits, mental health, and commitment level.
- Apply to be a donor. After you confirm you are qualified, you’ll want to apply to become a donor.
- Set the initial appointments. Once we get your application, and we confirm that you are qualified, we will set some initial screening appointments. These appointments will help us determine if you will make it through the next level.
- Medical screening and testing. As you make it through our process, expect that you will also undergo some medical screening and testing.
Know What to Expect after Collection
Once you get accepted as a donor, you will need to commit to a certain time period. You will provide sperm samples at our facility. Then, they will be processed in a lab. Here’s a look at the steps:
- Separation of Semen Components: The sperm is separated from other fluids in the semen, isolating the most viable sperm cells.
- Freezing with Cryoprotectants: Sperm is mixed with a cryoprotectant solution to prevent ice crystal formation and is frozen using liquid nitrogen at extremely low temperatures (-196°C or -320°F).
- Quality Control Testing: A portion of the sample may be thawed to ensure that the sperm survives the freezing and thawing process effectively.
Become Part of Our Catalog
Once you clear our screening process and you become a donor, you will become part of our catalog. This means that anyone who wants to find a sperm donor will have access to your listing. Recipients can search for information such as:
- Physical traits
- Medical information
- Genetic background
- Personality
- Education and profession
Once they choose a donor, they may begin their process of growing their families.
Understand You Might Be a Biological Parent
Before a donor gets started with us, we make sure they really understand what is going to happen afterwards. Be sure to ask us if you have any questions. We want to make sure that you know everything you need to be comfortable with the process.
Most importantly, you need to really understand that you will be a biological parent. This means that down the line, depending on which disclosure type you’ve opted into, you might be contacted by the donor conceived child.
