What to Expect as a Sperm Donor

The process of becoming a sperm donor may seem overwhelming. There are evaluations and screenings to complete to make sure that you’d make a suitable donor. Before you decide to become a sperm donor, it may make you feel more at ease to know how the entire process will work so that you feel prepared. Here’s what you can expect as a sperm donor:

Applying to Become a Donor

Your first step to becoming a sperm donor is to read the qualifications of your chosen sperm bank. If you meet the criteria, you’re all set to apply. At Cascade Cryobank, for example, some of our qualifications include being a male aged 21 – 39 years old. We are looking for active, disease-free donors who are of proportional height and weight and are educated and employable.

Each sperm bank will have its own set of qualifications so it’s important to find out what they are and make sure you’re a good match. You can then fill out our interest questionnaire to see if you’re eligible. One of our team members will contact you through your chosen method of communication to discuss the donation process, answer any questions that you have, and schedule your appointment.

Your Initial Appointment

At our initial appointment, we will conduct an interview through which we will get to know you better. We will discuss your education, professional history, and your reasons for wanting to become a sperm donor. At this time, an initial semen sample will be provided and evaluated to determine if it is acceptable for use in assisted reproductive therapy. If all goes well during this initial appointment, you’ll be invited back for a complete clinical and physical evaluation along with clinical laboratory testing. All of this is free of charge to you.

Being Admitted to Our Program

A team member from Cascade Cryobank will reach out to you to let you know that you have been accepted into the sperm donor program. From here, you are considered a regular donor. We will work together with you to schedule the most convenient times for you to donate. We expect donors to be able to donate between one and three times a week. We pay $100 per donation.

After “Retirement”

When you retire from our donation program, we require that you return 6 months after you last donation for one last infectious disease test. At this time, if you have any withheld payment from your donations, it will be released to you. At Cascade Cryobank, we also require a yearly checkup to verify your health status. This can continue for 20 years.

At Cascade Cryobank, we are committed to providing healthy sperm from donors who are active, educated, and dedicated. We will work with you to make donating convenient in order to help families that are looking for high-quality sperm.
