Are you thinking of growing your family? Everyone’s fertility journeys are so different, but whatever you decide, it’s one of the most important decisions on your plate. These days, there are options for having a family beyond the “traditional” methods. If you’re single, as part of a same-sex couple, in a relationship where you need to navigate some fertility concerns, using donor sperm definitely opens up some options for you.
It’s all about finding the right oath to help you have the family you really want. We are happy to be here and help you on this journey, too. Here are some things to ask yourself to decide if this is the right path for you.
What Is Your Family Vision?
The first thing you’ll need to decide is what your family vision really is. What kind of family do you want? The path you choose will have your family vision and your goals at its heart. Some things to consider when developing your vision:
- Timing. Do you want to become a parent now, or do you want to wait a little bit? There are options available for both of these desires.
- Relationship. Are you in a relationship or do you want to become a parent solo?
- LGBTQ+. Are you an LGBTQ+ couple looking to plan your family together?
- Fertility. Do you have any fertility challenges that you’ll need to navigate?
This is just an example of some of the questions you may want to ask to develop your vision. It’s really helpful to be clear on your family vision, including any obstacles you may need to overcome, before you continue on this journey.
What Is the Process?
Once you decide on your path and your vision, you will want to understand how the process works. Having clarity about what to do is something that can make or break your experience. Also, knowing about the process can be a deciding factor in helping you decide if using donor sperm is the right choice for you.
Using donor sperm typically involves working with a fertility clinic and a licensed sperm bank. So, you’ll want to share with your doctor your intentions and they will point you in the right direction. The donor sperm that you use should be rigorously screened, including genetic testing and even psychological evaluations. We go out of our way, for example, to make sure we are offering you the highest quality choices possible.
You will also want to understand the legal impact of using sperm donation. There are different disclosure types to navigate, such as Open ID and our Early Disclosure program. Note that we don’t allow for anonymous donors. You’ll also want to understand any legal concerns.
How Are You Feeling Emotionally?
Starting a family is a beautiful thing, and it can also be very emotional. Make sure you feel fully supported during the process. Talk to your doctor, your family, even a therapist, to help you navigate this time in your life.
Your goal should be to feel totally comfortable with your choice. If you feel, emotionally, that using donor sperm is right for you, then you’ll know you’re on the right path.
